Bridgeport Cemetery is located in the far northwestern corner of Section 25, Smoky View Township, Saline County, Kansas. The land was originally purchased from the Kansas Pacific Railroad in 1872 by Thomas Milton Husted, a Civil War veteran. Husted, along with several members of his immediate family, including his parents (Thomas and Sarah Willis Husted ) settled in the area, having moved from Des Moines, Iowa around 1866.

Upon the death of Thomas Husted on November 13, 1874, the younger Husted reserved an acre of land along the northern edge of the property for the creation of a family cemetery. It was then stipulated that the eastern half of the cemetery be reserved "for all time" for Husted family relatives and their descendants; the western half being made available to neighbors and friends. 100 lots, approximately 20' x 20' were created. Interestingly, and for unknown reasons, Thomas Milton Husted was not buried with his immediate family, but was interred at nearby Bethel Cemetery.
